Bears add long snapper

The Bears agreed to terms Wednesday with long snapper Jeremy Cain, the team announced via its official Twitter account.

Cain, 33, figures to provide insurance in case veteran long snapper Patrick Mannelly has to miss Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions because of injury. Mannelly wore a walking boot after Monday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, and his status is uncertain heading into Week 10.

Cain (6-1, 245) played at Massachusetts in college and has appeared in 81 NFL games from 2004 to 2012, including five games with the Bears in 2004 and three games with the Bears in 2005. He spent the past four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and was among the team’s final cuts this summer.

Mannelly, 38, is the Bears’ all-time leader in games played but missed six games in 2011 because of injuries. He was the Bears’ sixth-round draft choice in 1998.
