Usually the league confirms fines on Fridays, but we can confirm that Brandon Marshall was fined for wearing green shoes — he tweeted the fine letter.
The NFL fined Marshall $10,500 for violating “Uniform and Equipment Rules” during last Thursday’s win over the Giants. Marshall wore green shoes to promote Mental Health Awareness Week.
When tweeting the letter from the league, Marshall wrote, “Football is my platform not my purpose. This fine is nothing compared to the conversation started & awareness raised.”
Fines for uniform violations are generally $5,250, but Marshall got double, as this must have been considered a second offense. He said last week he expected to be fined for wearing the shoes and would match the fine in the form of a donation, and the attention it got was worth it, Marshall said Wednesday.
"We had a group out in California run some numbers for us and just the coverage and awareness that spread after the game was like $75,000 worth of coverage," he said after practice. "That’s after the game. Not speaking as far as the four quarters. So it was good. It was successful. I would have done it for $30 grand."
In the game, Marshall had nine catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
